Misc.: When the Illusion of Love Finally Disappears
This Was Never Love is an emotional rock ballad by Kheops One featuring Ailyn Mondragon on vocals, released on May 19, 2023. Written by Kheops One founder and guitarist Goran Vedriš, the song explores the painful realisation that a relationship once believed to be meaningful was never based on genuine love.
The narrator looks back on a connection marked by dishonesty, emotional imbalance and broken promises. They had offered support, protection and loyalty, only to discover that the other person's feelings were never what they appeared to be. At the centre of the song is a difficult but decisive realisation:
What felt like love may have been an illusion from the beginning.
The recording later appeared on Kheops One's second studio album, A Second Chance, released in 2025.
The history of This Was Never Love began long before its official release. According to Goran Vedriš, the original song was written approximately ten years earlier, in the Croatian language.
Even at that time, he had considered creating an English-language version.
Years later, he returned to the composition and developed it into a new Kheops One recording. Rather than simply translating the original lyrics, Goran wrote new English lyrics, rearranged the music and introduced additional melodies. Ailyn Mondragon contributed her own lead and backing vocal melodies, helping shape the final vocal interpretation. The result was a newly developed English-language rock ballad that retained a connection to its earlier Croatian origin while establishing a distinct identity within Kheops One's modern catalogue. This makes This Was Never Love another example of an older Goran Vedriš composition finding new life through the band's later recording lineup.
This was never love
I knew it from the start
It was written in the stone that is your heart
I was nothing more than just another one
Your list just seems to grow
When will it stop
I was there
When you fell and broke your wings
Took your hand
Kept you safe from all bad things
But as the time went further by
I could see your other side
The one you hid behind the lies
That held me hypnotized
The spell was gone into the night
Was time to stop
Would you swear that you'd stay here till the end
Don't you care about the things that lay ahead
I starred too long into those eyes
I got tired of your lies
Underneath your skin surprise
An empty shell of rock
Just empty words without an act
What our love has always lacked

The Ailyn Mondragon Era and A second Chance Album
This Was Never Love combines an earlier chapter of Goran Vedriš's songwriting with the later recording work of Kheops One. Originally written in Croatian, the composition was transformed into an English-language rock ballad with new lyrics, revised arrangements and additional melodies.
Ailyn Mondragon's lead and backing vocals, together with her contributions to the vocal melodies, helped give the recording its final character. Lyrically, the song offers a distinctive perspective on heartbreak. It is not simply about losing someone. It is about realising that the love one believed in may never have been real. This Was Never Love is a song about the painful moment when emotional illusion gives way to clarity.
